Coimbatore plays host to the 4th Renewable Energy 2011 Conference: Wind Energy Edition
Chennai, 17 November 2011: With an installed capacity of over 14.5 GW (as on 30 June, 2011) and available potential of 48.5 GW for wind energy, the way forward for Indian renewable energy sector is truly “Blowing’ In the Wind” - a report released by Energy Alternatives India during the 4th Renewable Energy 2011 Conference: Wind edition held at Coimbatore, yesterday. The Report is a comprehensive analysis of emerging business opportunities in the Indian wind power value chain.
India has matured as an attractive market for wind power generation. Evolving as a major power house, wind energy has made a robust 70% contribution to the total installed renewable energy capacity in India. The industry has made most of the incentives extended to the sector including preferential tariffs, accelerated depreciation and Generation Based Incentives (GBI), Renewable Purchase Obligations (RPO) etc. and as a consequence, has maintained a healthy Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of 19% over last few years. However, “wind sector has to play a critical role in the scheme of things in the journey towards sustainable development” said Mr Swaminathan Krishnamurthy, Associate Director, Ernst & Young while delivering the keynote address at the conference.
Pointing to the industry challenges, Mr Krishnamurthy said “One of the major constraints for the development of wind energy in India is fluctuations in power output due to inherent variability of wind power”.
Tamil Nadu, India’s leading state in wind energy is poised to play a significant role in working around this problem and contributing sizeable share to renewable's in India. Strategically located, Tamil Nadu is blessed with high wind velocity sites in abundance. It has emerged as an equally important engineering hub that offers vast opportunities for wind turbine manufacturers and component suppliers. Well-conceived policies and facilities offered by the state government has made the generation of wind power a viable and cost effective technology.
To provide further impetus, the state government is also planning to invest Rs.3000 Cr in laying transmission and distribution (T&D) lines.
Organised by Comnet Conferences, a division of Exhibitions India Group and organisers of Asia’s largest Renewable Energy Expos, the day-long conference successfully addressed the supply chain bottlenecks and highlighted various nuances of reducing costs and driving efficiency in wind energy generation.
Sharing insights, the speakers laid emphasis on developing indigenous manufacturing, as it would help them to reduce risk, control logistic cost and make wind energy generation more competitive.
Highlighting the innovative trends to increase project profitability in wind sector, Mr. Rajesh Katyal, Unit Head- R&D, C-WET said, “There is a strong need for indigenizing components to drive down the cost”. He further added, “Finding appropriate technology to reduce Transmission and Distribution (T&D) losses and strengthen grid evacuation is need of the hour”.
The session dedicated towards “ Manufacturing Challenges : Supply Chain & Logistics issues”, attracted over 120 delegates who were keen to learn about coping with manufacturing fluctuations, balancing demand – supply and strategic importance of global and local supply chain in order to drive down the cost. Addressing the participants on local sourcing Mr K V Suresh, Executive Director, Hansen Drives said, “ Today, indigenization is not a luxury, but, a necessity”.
The faculty profile comprised an eclectic and accomplished group of speakers including D.V. Giri, Chairman (Indian Wind Turbine Manufacturers Association ); Sarvesh Kumar, Deputy Managing Director (RRB Energy); Narasimhan Santhanam, Director, (Energy Alternatives India); K.P Alexander, Deputy Manager- Corporate Projects (United India Insurance Company Limited); Devesh Singh, Head- Southern Region, (India Energy Exchange); S. Rajendran, Vice President- Commercial, (Pioneer Wincon ) amongst others.
